Interview Stages Explained

When setting up a session, you'll choose an interview stage. Here's what each one means and how to prepare.

Screening

Typically a short call with a recruiter. Questions focus on:

  • Your background and work history
  • Why you're interested in the role/company
  • Salary expectations and availability
  • Basic qualifications

Whirl tip: Keep answers concise. Screeners move fast.

Technical

Used for roles requiring specific skills (engineering, data, design, etc.). Questions focus on:

  • Domain knowledge
  • Problem-solving ability
  • Technical tools and methodologies

Whirl tip: Think out loud as you work through problems.

Behavioral

Focused on past experiences using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Questions like:

  • "Tell me about a time you failed."
  • "Describe a conflict with a coworker."

Whirl tip: Prepare 6โ€“8 strong STAR stories that can be adapted to many questions.

Hiring Manager

A deeper conversation about fit, leadership style, and long-term goals.

Whirl tip: Research the team and company direction. Show alignment.

Panel

Multiple interviewers across functions. Expect a variety of question types.

Whirl tip: Address all panel members when answering, not just the person who asked.

Executive

Senior-level conversations around vision, strategy, and organizational impact.

Whirl tip: Think big. Show you understand the business beyond just your role.
